It’s been a busy few months since our last newsletter celebrating MHI’s one year anniversary. With global health and development season underway, we’re checking in to share an update on our work since April.

In May, we made our World Health Assembly debut in Geneva, where we co-convened events with Devex, Kokoro, Grand Challenges Canada, and the Health Innovation Exchange exploring how to improve the lives of older people globally, rapidly scale global mental health innovation, and accelerate innovation in global health. In collaboration with One Young World and Orygen, we talked to youth mental health leaders from around the world about their perception of social media and technology’s impact on Gen Z’s mental health. We marked one year since the national roll-out of the 988 crisis and suicide hotline, which has received more than 5 million calls, texts, and chats to date.

Last month, MHI returned to the UN General Assembly with an agenda to drive action toward addressing mental health at global scale, increasing accessibility and quality of care for people living with disabilities, health in cities, and more. On the main stage at the Clinton Global Initiative 2023 Meeting, we joined the Missing Billing Initiative and fellow partners in launching a commitment to action around accelerating disability inclusion in health systems worldwide — read more about it below.

Next week, we’ll be celebrating World Mental Health Day on October 10th with MHI leaders including Global Leader Erica Coe, Director of Brain Health Kana Enomoto, and Employee Health Co-Leader Barbara Jeffery and Jacqui Brassey joining mental health-focused events around the globe throughout the month. You can find us at the Global Mental Health Summit, the This Can Happen conference, the United Nations World Mental Health Day webinar, and more.

Will we see you there? Drop us a line and let us know!

Yours in health,
The MHI team

Collaboration spotlight

Advancing disability inclusion globally

We are collaborating with The Missing Billion Initiative, a global initiative aiming to transform health systems for better access and outcomes for the 1.3 billion people living with disabilities. Our partnership is anchored on growing a global coalition of funders and implementers to provide a platform to mobilize change. We recently published our first joint report exploring significant gaps in disability health data.

We also joined the The Missing Billion and fellow partners in launching a Commitment to Action to accelerate disability inclusion in health systems worldwide during Clinton Global Initiative 2023 Meeting. This commitment was made alongside partners including the Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc., the International Disability Alliance and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London, and aims to reduce the staggering 10- to 20-year life expectancy gap people with disabilities face compared to people without disabilities.

Advancing equitable and accessible mental health care in the United States

We have partnered with The Kennedy Forum to develop a systems map that helps users visualize current and future-state involvement of different stakeholder groups in accessing, providing, paying for, and/or utilizing mental health and substance use services in the United States. As part of The Kennedy Forum's broader Alignment for Progress agenda, MHI has facilitated a series of executive convenings to engage local and national leaders in designing cross-sectoral approaches to mental health.

We have also made an official commitment in support of Alignment for Progress. The Kennedy Forum has laid out a “90-90-90” vision that drives toward 90% of all individuals screened for mental health and substance use disorders, 90% of those screened able to receive evidence-based treatment, and 90% of those receiving treatment able to manage their symptoms in recovery by 2033. MHI commits to supporting Alignment for Progress partners on developing a 90-90-90 vision roadmap and to catalyzing equitable cross-system action toward mental health for all.
