We are thrilled to launch this newsletter as a forum designed exclusively for state and local government leaders like you to exchange insights, inspiration, and ideas. As a busy government leader, you are likely facing dynamic and complex challenges so we aim to curate a collection of timely and relevant insights and articles to help you elevate your programs’ performance and hone your own knowledge and skills.

In this first edition, we are sharing how state and local government can unlock value from generative AI (gen AI) and other new technologies, and how they are moving from theoretical to practical. Gen AI presents a sizable opportunity for US state and local governments. This technology has the power to transform service delivery and drive innovation like never before, from public health delivery and crisis preparedness to cloud infrastructure. At the same time, new tech highlights new uncertainties for you, your team, and your constituents.

Additionally to honor Women’s History Month, we’ve included some compelling articles and research on women in technology and women’s health overall. While women earn about half of science and engineering degrees, they make up less than 20 percent of people employed in these fields; when it comes to advancement in tech roles, only 52 women are promoted to manager for every 100 men.

Lastly, we welcome your feedback on this edition, future topics, and formats.

Thank you for your service,
Tim Ward and Jess Kahn from McKinsey’s US State & Local Government Practice
